Telehealth Speech Therapy: Fun, Flexible, and More Effective Than You Think
What is telehealth speech therapy?
At Tandem Allied Health, we make our speech therapy telehealth appointments fun and effective. All our online speech therapy consultations are with our professional speech pathologists registered with Speech Pathology Australia. We make sure our sessions are exciting and fast paced enough to keep children engaged and glued to their screen and simple enough for the biggest of tech phobes. Hear from our two online telehealth speech therapists Amy and Lasera on how it all works.
We have appointments available now so you can refer yourself and get started fast avoiding the waitlists and accessing a speech pathologist without having to leave the comfort of home.
What is telehealth speech therapy?
Amy: It’s the same as in-clinic speech therapy, just online. Kids join from home on a computer or iPad, it’s just as interactive, sometimes even more fun because we can pull up so many games. We still target all the same goals: speech sounds, language, literacy, AAC, and social communication.
Lasera: And you can join from anywhere! I’ve run sessions from homes, offices, even parked cars! It’s flexible and personal, using your own toys, routines, and real-life settings.
Any funny moments you can recall from your past speech telehealth sessions?
Lasera: A client’s Great Dane joined our role-play activity and took it very seriously, head tilts and all. We laughed the whole time.
Amy: Once, a dad walked in mid-session and let out the loudest fart, not realising we were on Zoom. We still laugh about it every week.
How do you keep kids engaged?
Amy: For some children screens are their happy place. We use that to our advantage, speech telehealth sessions are fully gamified.
Lasera: We tailor therapy to their interests: horses, Minecraft, country flags, whatever sparks curiosity.
What if my child won’t sit still?
Amy: Totally fine! Some kids learn best while moving. I’ve been taken for a ride on a pedal car mid-session. We add treasure hunts, movement breaks, and hands-on play.
Lasera: The iPad moves with the child, and we coach parents through strategies that fit into their everyday play.
Why do families love telehealth?
Amy: No traffic, no rushing, no waiting. Parents can cook dinner while therapy happens at home.
Lasera: Kids are calmer in their safe space and yes, therapy in pyjamas is allowed.
What do parents need to set up?
Amy: Just a laptop or iPad and the Zoom link we send.
Lasera: No fancy tech needed! We’ll walk you through it if you’re unsure.
Why do families love telehealth?
Amy: One family was sceptical, now they refuse to switch back to in-person. It’s easier, less stressful, and their child’s progress has been amazing.
Lasera: And no cancellations for sniffles or travel! Using familiar toys makes therapy more motivating and practical.
What would you say to a parent considering trying speech a speech telehealth session for the first time?
Amy: Try our free 15-minute Telehealth Taster. It’s not like online school during lockdown, I promise!
Lasera: Research shows telehealth is just as effective as in-person therapy. Don’t wait months on a list when your child could be making progress now.
Dream telehealth sessions?
Lasera: Coaching a client in real-time at a café or job interview, that’s the future!
Amy: For kids, it’s all about their passions. If they love Spiderman, we swing through speech sounds together , “Spiderman,” “swing,” “slide,” “splat.” Endless ways to make learning fun
