7 Tips to Conserve Energy and Work Around Fatigue Symptoms
Simple ways to make daily tasks easier when fatigue is part of your life
Living with fatigue can make even everyday tasks feel like climbing a mountain. Whether it’s part of a long-term health condition, recovery from injury, or just a particularly demanding season of life, learning to manage your energy can make a huge difference.
Occupational Therapists often call this energy conservation — a simple but powerful approach that helps you get more done with less strain. These small, practical changes can help you work smarter, reduce fatigue, and still get through what matters most in your day.
Here are seven easy ways to start conserving your energy and working with your body, not against it.
Fatigue is a symptom that many face day in day out as a part of many health conditions or injuries.
Sit rather than stand – standing uses more energy than sitting, so anything you can do sitting down saves energy – try sitting to complete food preparation, showering, getting dressed etc.
Regular rest breaks – planning breaks between activities, even if only for 5 mins can save energy and assist you to recover more quickly than taking a large amount of time to rest at the end of the activity or day
Use your body well – good body mechanics means you avoid strain and awkward postures – work smarter not harder!
Place frequently used items in easy reach – which is usually between shoulder and hip height – e.g. milk in the fridge in easy reach, your coffee cup and tea/coffee on the bench rather than in the cupboard above your head
Use calendars and todo lists to plan and organise your time, and prioritise tasks in the day – place them in thoughtful areas you will see easily – such as fridge, bench top
Use a trolley to push items rather than carry them – laundry trolley, kitchen trolley
Plan your day to do more difficult or high energy tasks earlier when you have more energy to burn!
